Noto Antica: heroa

Walking through the lanes of the Ancient Noto ( Noto before 1693 earthquake, on the Alveria mountain.)
not far from the ruins of the Church of Carmine, there are some grottos full of little niches, once containig portraits of dead people, worshipped as local heroes.( The Heroa)
They go back to the Greek time, exactly to the Ellenistic period (III b.C.)
Most of the niches contained portraits painted there. Some other were carved on stone
A beautiful effect!!
