just carobs....what do you do with this?

Vedere un albero di carrubo è tra  le mille curiosità dei turisti, soprattutto d'oltre Oceano.
Qui nel sud Est di Sicilia..non è un problema:la campagna   mediterranea offre splendidi esemplari di carrubi ovunque...
Piuttosto risulta  difficile per noi mostrare il frutto maturo se si è in città.

Giorni fa ho trovato queste splendide carrube al mercato di Ortigia..ed inevitabile la domanda fattami : 

"what's this? carruba? what do you do with this?"

Già..che si fa con la carruba oggi?

Nei ricordi di famiglia..si faceva lo sciroppo di carruba, bollendole  e mescolandole  poi con miele....un magico decotto per curare la tosse.

In campo farmaceutico si producono sciroppi a base di carrube ed ancora  delle ottime caramelle, ma difficili da trovare in commercio, riconoscibili per l'involucro semplice di carta oleata che avvolge questi piccoli rettangoli semi trasparenti dal sapore dolce ed amaro al tempo stesso...cosi' diverse dalle profumatissime e colorate gomme o caramelle più accattivanti per i bimbi di oggi.
Principalmente però,le carrube sono usate  come ingrediente base per farine alimentari  in qualità di  addessanti e per confetture e distillati.
Si dice in giro che sia un ingrediente della Sacher Torte ed addirittura della Coca cola.

Ecco, dopo queste spiegazioni,i turisti mi guardano stupiti, meravigliati ma soddisfatti.....e  via a fare fotografie a questo cesto di carrube come se fosse oro!!!!Ed io con loro.

A dire il vero, a proposito di oro, la sua  unità di misura  è un termine di origine araba (carato in italiano) che indica proprio  i semi all'interno del frutto di carrubo.

To see a carob tree is among the thousands and thousands curiosities of  tourists , especially those coming from the other side of the Ocean!
Here , in the South East of Sicily is not a problem, as  our Mediterranean countryside is full of marvellous carob trees.
The question is how to show them the fruit , if you are in the city centre.
A few days ago, I saw this carobs at the market in Ortigia, so quickly the question came: 

"What's this? carruba? what do you do with this? "

Hmm..what do we do with this?

In old memories, carobs where used by grannies to make a magic scyrup, boling carobs and then mixing with honey to cure cough! It's still used in pharmacy and to make very good candies that is hard to find, but easily recognizible: little brownish semi-transparent rectangular candies, enveloped in white oiled paper. So different from the colourful and tasty candies that children like so much! 
Basically carobs are  ingredients used for food flours as thickener and for jams  and  distillates.
Someone said that it's  a secret ingredient in the Sacher Torte and Coke,as well.

After these information, tourists look at me satisfied and amazed..and then, all taking pictures to that basket of carobs, as if it were Gold! And me, too!

About gold, it must be said that its unit of measure.."Carato" in italian is an Arabic term , that is the just the seed of the carob fruit.

Now it's better! Here I am! It's 6 weeks now since I fell, having troubles with the legaments of my right knee! Ahi che dolor! No work,no walk .......... Now it's better.....but slowly slowly....... Buona giornata!
